All Children 8 and Older Should be Screened for Anxiety, U.S. Task Force Says
A recent article by Christian Caron in the New York Times shines light on the importance of anxiety screenings for all children 8 to 18. “Most kids in need of mental health care don’t get it” says Dr. Stephen Whiteside, an ABCT member and at the Mayo Clinic, noting why this may be especially true of children with anxiety disorders. Caron explains how routine anxiety screenings help parents and professionals monitor children’s mental health, detect early signs of difficulties, and seek services when needed.
Caron offers tips on steps parents can take if they suspect their child might be struggling with anxiety. If you wish to learn more about childhood mental health, ABCT’s Children’s Mental Health page may be of interest. As noted in the article, psychotherapy is the fist-line treatment for childhood anxiety disorders. You can find providers specialized in pediatric mental health using ABCT’s Find a Therapist Tool.
