Receiving CBT as an Older Adult
The Health Medicine Network covered a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders that examined long-term effects of CBT on disorders in the elderly.
The study shows that CBT has both better short- and long-term effectiveness on multiple disorders in adults over 65, including late-in-life depression and anxiety. CBT can equip patients with new skills to help them tackle conditions like depression and anxiety, improving their overall quality of life.
Older adults who had received CBT had a 70% reduction in symptoms for their primary disorder for both short- and long-term effects of their disorder compared to 42% reduction among participants in a discussion group. Looking at these same older adults 10 years later, researchers saw lasting improvements more than twice as often as with those who had only the talk therapy.
