Reducing Teen Social Media Use with CBT
Helping Our Teens Reduce Their Social Media Use
Social media, when overused leads to insomnia, depression, irritability, and potentially other mental health problems.
Two ABCT members, Drs Anne Marie Albano and Kate McKnight, working at Lumate Health, are exploring ways to provide high-quality, evidence-based care for teens with anxiety. They say that “social media is an inescapable part” of adolescence, and they counsel parents on ways to work with their own children in dealing with over-use.
McKnight recommends parents have open dialogue with their kids, making it judgement free. McKnight and Albano say it’s important for parents to understand social media’s siren call for teens. They don’t recommend cold turkey withdrawal but, rather, parents providing alternatives at home to capture their children’s interest as well as time limits.
